You see these whacky little, sputnik, sparkler like air plants growing in trees and along wires all around Oaxaca. The first time I ever saw them the taxi driver told me they were bird's nests. That's how I learned the Spanish word for nest - "nido". So taxi drivers, while being my main number one informants, may not always be the most reliable of informants. Still he thought they were bird's nest, patently false but nonetheless a super charming idea.
