Oaxacan Churches

Many people in Oaxaca practice a religion that blends traditional catholocism with indigenous native belief systems. For instance in areas of strong mixed religous beliefs the people like to bathe and dress the statues of the saints.  On particular days they will parade them through the streets.

Oaxacans  seem particularly fond of portraying Jesus returning to Jerusalem on a donkey.  I saw this motif in almost every village church I went to.We'll have the opportunity to visit plenty of churches....Oaxaca city has no less than 26 colonial churches  one more amazing than the next but the really special ones are out in the villages.  We'll have a chance to visit at least two village churches and if we're very lucky we'll see a procession or two.
