Our beautiful, locally grown, homemade meal at Luz de Luna in Huayapam - I'm pretty sure there was at least one round of applause for the chef.
Starting with the pre-hispanic drink Tejate, made in it's hometown of Huayapam ( I know it's a little unusual, but in Oaxaca many towns have their traditional hometown beverage) followed by three different tamales
Started out as a masa with the subtle flavor of chepil, the next a black bean and masa with the anise flavored leaf of an endemic avocado tree, and finally a banana leaf wrapped tamale. Delicious and everyone got a wooden tray with their three.
The tejate seen above is traditionally served in red painted bowls from Guerrero |
. And then I was too full to eat more but I believe it was a soup and a tasajo (thin meat) dish, followed by another prehispanic drink this one made from squash.
